30 Jan Glen Iris Podiatrist Hot Summer Feet Tips!
Summer means hot weather and spending more time in open footwear (eg. thongs) or no footwear in some cases. It is very important that you look after your summer feet and our Glen Iris Podiatrist has outlined 5 hot tips to keep your feet healthy and safe this summer period:
1.Thongs with Support
The Aussie summer is not complete without a good pair of thongs. Most thongs, however, do not provide adequate support for your arch, and can lead to discomfort or injuries over long-term use. Instead, opt for thongs with support, such as Archies.
2.Moisturise your heels
The hot summer weather can often result in dry skin due to excess sweating. Make sure to moisturise your feet, especially your heels daily throughout the season to prevent cracks and calluses. Read further HERE about cracked heels.
3.Hot Sweaty Feet? Deodorant is the answer!
The normal anti-perspirant deodorant we use for our underarms can combat the common problem of stinky feet. The apocrine sweat glands in our armpits are the same sweat glands on the palms of our hands and soles of our feet. Using deodorant can combat smell and reduce chances of contracting tinea and other foot infections.
4.Slip, slop, slap
It is well known that there are many benefits to sunscreen, however, we often forget to apply sunscreen to our feet. The skin on your feet is susceptible to melanoma or other skin cancers. If suspicious marks appear on your feet, consult your podiatrist. Make sure to cover yourself head-to-toe in sunscreen when enjoying the outdoors.
Walking barefoot is common during the warmer weather, however it can put your feet at risk. Be aware of your surroundings and if an injury occurs consult medical advice immediately.
