The McKenzie Method

Learn how to treat your own aches and pains with the McKenzie Method

If you’ve ever dealt with persistent back or neck pain, you know how frustrating it can be to find long-lasting relief. The McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a globally recognised system of assessment and treatment that empowers patients to take control of their recovery with targeted exercises and posture correction.

Developed in the 1950s by New Zealand physiotherapist Robin McKenzie, this method has helped millions manage and even eliminate musculoskeletal pain without relying heavily on medication, surgery, or passive treatments.

What Is the McKenzie Method?

The McKenzie Method is an evidence based system used to assess and treat spinal and extremity pain (upper limb and lower limb). It’s based on the idea that certain repeated movements and sustained postures can affect pain patterns in a predictable way. McKenzie practitioners use a systematic assessment process to classify the patient’s condition and prescribe specific exercises that can reduce and abolish the pain.

The process has four major components:

1. Detailed mechanical assessment of symptoms and movement patterns;

2. Classification of symptoms to determine most effective treatment;

3. Individualised treatment of specific exercises/movements and postures to reduce and abolish
symptoms;

4. Prevention of recurrences by learning how to self manage symptoms and recognise how to manage your condition independently.

Common Conditions Treated

MDT can be used to treat all musculoskeletal conditions. In particular, it has been found to be especially effective with:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Joint problems in the upper and lower limb
  • Tendon

Benefits of the McKenzie Method

The McKenzie Method offers a practical, proven approach to musculoskeletal pain—especially for people who prefer an active, self-directed recovery. By focusing on simple, repeatable movements and patient education, this method doesn’t just treat symptoms; it helps people understand their bodies and prevent future flare-ups.

• Non-invasive and medication-free
• Empowers patients to take an active role in their recovery
• Often effective for both acute and chronic pain
• Can reduce or eliminate the need for expensive diagnostics like MRIs

“If it is possible to teach a patient to treat themselves, every patient is deserving of that education and every clinician is obliged to provide it” Robin McKenzie
