What is IBS?

31 Oct What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, otherwise known as IBS, is a condition that affects the colon (large bowel). It is a common gastrointestinal disorder, reported to affect 1 in 7 people. While it can present at any age, it tends to most often occur before the age of 40. It is also more common in females than males.

What are the symptoms of IBS

There are a variety of symptoms that can be experienced with IBS, including:

  • abdominal pain, or discomfort;
  • stomach bloating;
  • wind;
  • constipation and/or diarrhoea.

While not life threatening, these symptoms are uncomfortable and can be very impactful on day-to-day life and quality of life.

It is important to note that some of these symptoms are similar to those that are common in other bowel conditions, so it is important to speak with your GP if you experience any of these and follow proper diagnosis pathways.

What causes IBS

There are still some mixed views and uncertainty about the exact causes. Some key factors that have been identified as potential triggers include:

  • stress or anxiety;
  • diet or food intolerances;
  • medications;
  • inappropriate regulation of signalling between the gut and the brain (or sensitive gut);
  • post infection, such as ‘gastro’.

Some symptoms can be exacerbated or triggered by particular foods, but these vary from person to person and should be worked through with the guidance of a Dietitian.
